Major Renovations Underway at Green Island and Orchid Island Airports

Taipei: Major renovation and construction projects have commenced at Green Island and Orchid Island airports, marking the start of a NT$1.2 billion (US$39.75 million) initiative to enhance four offshore airports, as announced by the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA).

According to Focus Taiwan, a groundbreaking ceremony took place on Green Island, with Lin Kuo-shian, the administrative deputy minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), presiding over the event. The initiative includes developments at Green Island Airport and Orchid Island Airport in Taitung County, alongside Qimei Airport and Wangan Airport in Penghu County.

Lin Kuo-shian highlighted the significance of Orchid Island and Green Island as tourist hotspots known for their ecological wealth and cultural uniqueness. However, he noted that transportation facilities have been lacking, impacting both residents' commuting and tourism growth. The new terminals are expected to offer improved comfort and efficiency, featuring designs that reflect local cultural elements.

The CAA detailed that the Green Island Airport improvements will include a new C-shaped covered walkway, terminal renovations, and landscape enhancements, while the Orchid Island Airport will see an expanded terminal themed around the Yami (Tao) Indigenous culture. Green Island's design will incorporate elements of the Kuroshio Current and marine life.

Lin emphasized that the revamped airports will serve as symbolic gateways for their regions, potentially boosting visitor numbers. The ceremony was attended by several officials, including Taitung County Deputy Magistrate Wang Chih, and representatives from various MOTC agencies.

The renovations at Green Island and Orchid Island airports are projected to conclude by July 2027, after experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the MOTC. Meanwhile, the CAA mentioned that the airport projects in Qimei Township and Wangan Township are anticipated to be put out for tender by the year's end.
