Man Sentenced to 7.5 Years for Bank Robbery with Stolen Scissors

New Taipei:A 50-year-old man, surnamed Wang, has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison after robbing a bank using a pair of stolen scissors. This unusual incident concluded with Wang calmly sitting in the bank's waiting area until police arrived to arrest him, as reported by the New Taipei District Court.

According to Focus Taiwan, the court's verdict detailed that Wang stole the scissors from a pan-fried dumpling and pot sticker store in New Taipei's Banqiao District on the morning of June 17. He then proceeded to a Taishin Bank branch on Guanqian East Road, where he brandished the scissors and demanded money from the tellers, threatening a customer's life in the process.

The court revealed that the bank tellers complied, handing over NT$404,200 (US$12,338) in cash, which Wang pocketed. Instead of fleeing, he waited in the bank's seating area, leading to his swift arrest.

During interrogation and the subsequent trial, Wang admitted to the robbery, citing financial distress and a desire for free meals provided in prison as his motives. Despite his lawyer's request for compulsory psychiatric treatment, the court determined Wang was mentally sound and aware of his actions.

Wang's history of theft and continued criminal behavior were pivotal in the court's decision to sentence him to 7 years and 6 months for armed robbery. Additionally, he received a three-month sentence for theft, which can be exchanged for a fine. The court's rulings are subject to appeal.
