Miaoli: A 41-year-old man surnamed Liu from Miaoli County made a significant stride in his recovery journey by walking into Baishatun Gongtian Temple, marking a milestone ahead of the annual pilgrimage dedicated to the Sea Goddess Mazu. This comes after months of rehabilitation following a stroke he suffered earlier in the year.
According to Focus Taiwan, with the support of staff from Nanshi Nursing Home in Miaoli City and aided by a walker, Liu entered the main hall of the temple on March 27. A press release from the nursing home detailed that Liu appeared emotionally moved as he set aside his walker to pray-a moment that resonated with both fellow worshippers and his caregivers, reflecting on his path from incapacitation to standing independently once more.
Nanshi Nursing Home elaborated that Liu, originally from Tongxiao Township, had been an annual participant in the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage until a stroke in November last year left him bedridden. He was admitted to the nursing facility in January, where he initially faced deep frustration. However, with dedicated care and support, Liu began to emerge from his despondency, even having his nasogastric tube removed.
Driven by a desire to "offer incense before Mazu again," Liu received encouragement from the nursing home team, which launched a "dream-fulfillment project" to assist him in reconnecting with his faith. Leading up to the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage, a significant religious event in Taiwan, Liu practiced walking with a walker daily, enduring the physical challenges of rehabilitation.
The nursing home emphasized that the "dream-fulfillment project" served not only as a means to achieve a personal goal for Liu but also played a crucial role in his rehabilitation, utilizing psychological motivation to aid his recovery.
The Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage commenced early Monday from Tongxiao, home to Gongtian Temple, drawing a record 460,000 devotees for the eight-day trek to Chaotian Temple in Beigang Township, Yunlin County. On Thursday, the Baishatun Mazu procession reached Chaotian Temple, where the Mazu palanquin completed the "fire-gathering" ritual, a key element symbolizing spiritual renewal and power transfer.
The procession embarked on its return journey early Friday, with pilgrims scheduled to arrive back at Gongtian Temple on Monday. Known for its unpredictable route, the Baishatun pilgrimage is guided by what is believed to be the will of the deity expressed through the movements of the palanquin.
