Taipei: Metro and rail services across Taiwan experienced temporary disruptions after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of the island on Saturday night at 11:05 p.m. As a precautionary measure, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) evacuated some of its staff from select facilities. According to Focus Taiwan, the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 32.3 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall, with a depth of 72.8 km. Seventeen out of Taiwan's 22 counties and cities reported a seismic intensity of 4 on the island's seven-tier scale. In the aftermath of the quake, metro services in Taipei and Taichung reduced their speeds but returned to normal operations later that night, as informed by metro operators. Similarly, the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) Corporation reported that six trains-four southbound and two northbound-made temporary stops following seismic alerts in the Nangang and Yunlin sections shortly after the earthquake occurred. TSMC, recognized as the wo rld's largest contract chipmaker, reported that some of its fabs in the Hsinchu Science Park met evacuation criteria, prompting personnel to evacuate outdoors in line with emergency protocols. The company assured that safety systems at all fabs remained functional. The Hsinchu Science Park Administration stated that several companies in the Yilan, Longtan, and Hsinchu parks evacuated staff as a safety measure. Despite this, power and water supplies across the park complex remained stable, although there were reports of elevator malfunctions in two biomedical buildings, with repair efforts ongoing. Additionally, the National Fire Agency reported that part of the ceiling in a waiting area at Terminal 2 of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport collapsed, but no injuries were recorded. Six incidents of people being trapped in elevators were reported in Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which have been resolved. As of 1 a.m. Sunday, authorities reported no major injuries resulting from the earthquake. At o ne point, a power outage affected 3,465 households in Dong'ao Township, Yilan County, but service has since been restored, as confirmed by the state-owned Taiwan Power Co.
