Taoyuan:The union representing workers at Micron Technology Inc.'s operations in Taoyuan has announced a strike scheduled for Thursday. This action is in solidarity with workers in Taichung who are engaged in a dispute with the U.S. memory chipmaker over profit-sharing.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taoyuan union stated that the strike aims to pressure Micron into presenting a concrete profit-sharing proposal during a mediation meeting with the Taichung union on the same day. The union is calling on its members to express their dissatisfaction with the current system and to push for a profit-sharing mechanism.
The announcement follows nearly two weeks after the Taoyuan union secured authorization to strike, with a majority vote from its members. Under Taiwanese law, unions must complete mediation and obtain approval from over half of their members before declaring a strike.
Micron employs about 3,000 workers in Taoyuan and 12,300 in Taichung, with significant portions of these employees belonging to their local unions. The unions are demanding a mechanism to distribute 15 percent of Micron's operating profits to employees, criticizing the current Incentive Pay Plan for its lack of transparency.
Previously, the Taoyuan union accused Micron of not offering a concrete proposal after a board meeting and instead providing short-term benefits like meal subsidies. The union emphasized the need for substantive negotiations rather than temporary solutions.
The number of workers expected to participate in the strike is unspecified, but local media reports suggest it will last one day. In response, Micron has stated that it respects employees' legal rights and is committed to ongoing discussions with the unions to find a mutually acceptable solution.
The strike comes soon after President Lai Ching-te attended the opening of Micron's new facility in Taichung, where he encouraged continued negotiations to maintain harmonious labor relations.
