North Korea on Wednesday denounced Japan's additional discharge of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, saying that the world cannot help but face a "terrifying nuclear disaster." In late June, Japan began releasing its seventh batch of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean and is scheduled to do so through July 16, according to Japanese media reports. In August 2023, Japan started discharging such water, more than 12 years after three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plant suffered a meltdown due to a powerful earthquake. North Korea said the radioactive level near the Fukushima power plant has risen since the water discharge and denounced Japan for making a "far-fetched" claim that the water is safely treated. "The humankind cannot avoid a terrifying nuclear disaster due to Japan's shameless and irresponsible discharge of the nuclear-contaminated water," the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a commentary.
