Prague: The National Palace Museum (NPM)’s treasured “Jadeite Cabbage with Insects” along with over 100 other works from its collection will be exhibited in the Czech Republic for the first time starting next month, as announced by the NPM in a statement on Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, the exhibition titled “100 Treasures, 100 Stories: Treasures from the National Palace Museum” will be held from September 11 to December 31 at the National Museum in Prague. This marks the first time the renowned jadeite cabbage has been showcased overseas since its appearance at the Tokyo National Museum in 2014, and it is the first occasion for NPM works to be displayed in the Czech Republic.
The NPM described the overseas exhibition as an integral part of its centennial celebrations, aiming to engage with the European public through the artistic styles and stories of the works. The exhibition also seeks to introduce European audiences to the cultural heritage of Taiwan, aligning with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture’s “Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025” campaign.
The jadeite cabbage is currently exhibited in Room 302 of the museum’s Northern Branch, but it will be replaced by two items from the same “cabbage collection” starting August 4. One of these items, the “Mini Jadeite Cabbage,” is intricately carved with a mantis perched on the stalk, highlighting nature’s coexistence. The other piece, the “Jadeite Cabbage-shaped Flower Holder,” is believed to have been carved with techniques from the 18th to 19th century and is triangular in shape and hollow inside.
