New Taipei Explores Metro Link Between Xiulang Bridge and Gongguan

New taipei: New Taipei City is progressing with plans to establish a metro line connecting Xiulang Bridge Station in Zhonghe District to Gongguan Station in Taipei. Mayor Hou Yi-ih announced that a feasibility report will be submitted to the central government for review later this year.

According to Focus Taiwan, this development follows the Taipei City government's cancellation of a broader "North South Line" in 2018. The New Taipei city government identified a need for better transportation options for Zhonghe residents commuting to Taipei and proposed a 3.1-kilometer underground route with four stations between Xiulang Bridge and Gongguan.

Mayor Hou stated that work on the feasibility report for the New Taipei segment commenced last July and is expected to be ready for submission by mid-year. In a notable development, Taipei and New Taipei reached an agreement in 2023 to extend the proposed line northward to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station, thus expanding it to a total of 8 kilometers and renaming it the Zhonghe-Guangfu Line.

During his visit to Xiulang Bridge Station, Mayor Hou concentrated on the Xiulang Bridge-Gongguan section, as Taipei has not yet shared an update on its assessment of the extended line. Presently, passengers traveling from Xiulang Bridge Station on the Circular (Yellow) Line need to transfer to the Green Line at Dapinglin for a 20-minute journey to Gongguan.
