New Taipei Mayor Pledges Support for Crash Victims’ Families Seeking Compensation

New Taipei: New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih announced that the city government is committed to assisting the families of those affected by last month’s tragic car-ramming incident in Sanxia District in securing compensation. This announcement comes just two days following the death of the driver involved in the crash.

According to Focus Taiwan, Mayor Hou emphasized the city’s dedication to supporting the victims’ families in their quest for compensation. He stated that the city’s Legal Affairs Department, Education Department, and Social Welfare Department have formed a collaborative mechanism to offer coordinated assistance to the affected families.

The incident, which occurred on May 19, involved a car crashing into a group of schoolchildren and their guardians outside Bei Da Elementary School. It resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left 12 others injured. The driver, a 78-year-old man named Yu, was also among those injured and succumbed to multiple organ failure on Saturday at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, as reported by the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office.

Hsu Hung-jen, deputy director of the New Taipei Legal Affairs Department, shared with CNA that the city has sought the expertise of the Association for Victim’s Support (AVS) to aid the victims following the incident. Hsu clarified that despite Yu’s passing, civil liability remains, and legal claims can still be pursued against his heirs. For victims requiring additional support beyond what AVS can provide, the department is prepared to arrange further legal assistance.
