Osaka Asian Film Festival to Showcase Seven Taiwanese Premieres

Osaka: Seven Taiwanese films are set to make their Japanese premiere at the Osaka Asian Film Festival (OAFF) 2025 next month, including the notable entries "Yen and Ai-Lee" by director Lin Shu-yu and "Family Matters" by director Pan Ke-yin, both of which are contenders for festival awards.

According to Focus Taiwan, the OAFF announced on February 14 the films shortlisted in the Competition section, featuring "Yen and Ai-Lee" and "Family Matters" among them, as highlighted in a recent press release by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture. The Competition section showcases films completed after September 30, 2023, that have not yet been released in Japan. Winners of the Grand Prix and Most Promising Talent Award will be selected by the OAFF jurors from these films.

"Family Matters" achieved the Outstanding Screenplay Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Project Promotion in 2024, and its screening at the OAFF will serve as its world premiere. Meanwhile, "Yen and Ai-Lee" secured the Kim Jiseok Award at the Busan International Film Festival, with actress Yang Kuei-mei receiving the best supporting actress accolade at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards last year for her role in the film.

In the "Special Program: Taiwan Movies on the Move 2025" section, five more Taiwanese productions will be featured alongside "Yen and Ai-Lee" and "Family Matters." These include "Blind Love," "Breezy Day," "The Chronicles of Libidoists," "Cupcakes, Lonely Cats," and "Dead Talents Society."

The screenings are scheduled to occur at Theatre Umeda Cinema and ABC Hall during the festival, which will run from March 14 to March 23. For additional information, interested parties can visit the OAFF's website.
