Taipei:Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Minister Hsu Chia-ching has resigned following allegations of misusing public resources during overseas trips. Opposition lawmakers accused her of unnecessary travels and misuse of resources, prompting her resignation to facilitate official investigations.
According to Focus Taiwan, Premier Cho Jung-tai accepted Hsu's resignation shortly after it was submitted. The resignation came in the wake of allegations from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which charged Hsu with excessive international travel and spending during her time at the OCAC.
In a statement, Hsu refuted the allegations, describing them as unfounded accusations that have persisted throughout her tenure. She emphasized her commitment to allowing an independent investigation and expressed regret over leaving projects incomplete.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is investigating by requesting information from Taiwan's representative offices in Germany, France, and the U.S. The TPP claimed Hsu traveled 47 times, totaling 526 days and NT$23.83 million, potentially breaching conflict-of-interest rules.
At a press conference, TPP Legislator Hung Yu-shiang presented an audio clip alleging Hsu's family connections in Washington, D.C., and misuse of diplomatic resources. The TPP also accused Hsu of including her underage son in official delegations, calling for her suspension pending further inquiry.
