Taipei: President Lai Ching-te and former President Tsai Ing-wen extended their congratulations to U.S. climber Alex Honnold following his remarkable ascent of Taipei 101. The daring climb, completed without the use of ropes, saw Honnold reach the skyscraper's spire at 10:43 a.m. after commencing his climb at 9 a.m. According to Focus Taiwan, the event was broadcast live as part of the Netflix special "Skyscraper Live." President Lai, in a Facebook post, praised Honnold's bravery and noted that the live broadcast captivated audiences both at the base of the skyscraper and across television screens. He expressed gratitude to those involved in organizing the event and highlighted how the broadcast shared the enthusiasm of the Taiwanese public and the scenic beauty of the island with the world. Former President Tsai Ing-wen also offered her congratulations, describing Honnold's climb as a "historic feat." She expressed appreciation to the organizers and spectators, noting that the challenge not only realized Honnold's dream but also showcased Taiwan's safety, order, and prosperity on an international stage. Tsai remarked that Honnold's accomplishment exemplified how courage and dreams can lead to the achievement of seemingly impossible goals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined in celebrating Honnold's achievement, emphasizing that "true courage knows no limits." The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan, also praised Honnold's successful free solo climb. The AIT noted that Honnold's record-setting ascent brought global attention to the iconic Taipei 101, enhancing international awareness of the landmark situated in the heart of Taipei.
