Renault Korea Motors Co., the South Korean unit of Renault S.A., is expected to brace for a full-scale strike for the time being as wage talks with its labor union show little signs of progress, according to company and union officials Monday. Unionized workers of Renault Korea have been on a full-scale strike since Sept. 13, demanding improved wages and working conditions. Earlier in the day, Kim Dong-seok, head of the Renault Korea union, launched a hunger strike, calling for management to swiftly offer a deal. It is unclear how the full-scale strike will affect production at Renault Korea, but the company has operated some production lines. "We are ready to return to the negotiation table whenever management presents a revised proposal," Kim said. A Renault Korea official expressed the company's commitment to resolving the situation, stating, "We will keep the lines of communication with the union open and make every effort to reach a swift and smooth settlement." Representatives of the two sides earlier reached a tentative deal on key issues, including a basic salary increase of 73,000 won (US$54.70) and a performance bonus of 3 million won.
