Taipei: A male bicycle rider in his 70s was killed and two scooter riders were injured after they were struck by a car driven by a 76-year-old woman, local authorities reported. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon near National Cheng Kung University in Tainan.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Tainan City Fire Department received a report at 1:46 p.m. about a traffic accident at the intersection of Shengli Road and University Road in Tainan's East District. Rescue personnel found a man in his 70s in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), along with a male rider and a female scooter rider who sustained minor injuries. All three were transported to the hospital, where the critically injured man was later declared dead.

After a preliminary investigation, police and fire authorities found that the 76-year-old woman, surnamed Liu, was driving westbound on University Road with a female friend in the passenger seat. As she approached the intersection at Shengli Road, she suddenly lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, according to the police.

The car sped past other vehicles waiting at a red light and collided with two scooters being driven by a 52-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, along with a cyclist crossing the road. It continued through the intersection, only coming to a stop after crashing into a row of parked scooters. Police noted that the crash site stretched over several dozen meters. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
