Rock Star-Turned-Politician Named Taiwan’s Representative to Finland

Taipei: Former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Freddy Lim, a Taiwanese rock singer-turned-politician, has been named by President Lai Ching-te as Taiwan’s representative to Finland, the Presidential Office announced Monday. Earlier the same day, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung stated that Lim’s appointment acknowledges his efforts in human rights diplomacy and his experience in international exchanges.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lim, who served as a national legislator from 2016 to 2024 and founded the rock band Chthonic, will assume a special diplomatic appointment that will not disrupt career diplomats’ promotions. Although some local news media criticized the appointment as partisan patronage, Lin defended the decision as placing the right person in the appropriate role.

Lim, 49, expressed on his Facebook page that his tenure on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan allowed him to advance congressional diplomacy and foster Taiwan’s international participation. His eight years of legislative experience helped him cultivate strong ties with counterparts in the European Union and Northern Europe, which he plans to leverage to enhance exchanges between Taiwan and Finland.

As a lawmaker, Lim advocated for Taiwan’s involvement in the international Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) and the Open Government Partnership (OGP), a multilateral initiative aimed at promoting open government and combating corruption. Through his advocacy, Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan successfully joined the OGP summit.

Lim also represented Taiwan at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Denmark and the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway, sharing Taiwan’s democratic experiences and seeking international support. He led Amnesty International Taiwan from 2010 to 2014, collaborating with chapters in Finland, Germany, Sweden, and Australia on human rights, gender equality, and protection of the underprivileged.

As he prepares to take on his new role, Lim acknowledged that diplomatic success is not guaranteed but promised to work diligently. He co-founded the opposition New Power Party (NPP) in 2015, was elected as an NPP lawmaker in 2016, and later left the NPP to serve as an independent legislator in 2020. In March 2023, he announced he would not seek reelection to care for a family member with a rare disease and subsequently joined the ruling DPP in November 2023.

Lim’s journey began in 1995 during his college years when he founded Chthonic, a band known as “the Black Sabbath of Asia.” In 2020, The Guardian described Chthonic as “cultural ambassadors for Taiwan — its history, myths, and struggles.”
