Saint Eir Clinic Staff Released on Bail Amid Hidden Camera Investigation

Taipei: The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office has released Saint Eir Clinic director Li I-chan and a manager surnamed Huang from the clinic's Taipei Zhongxiao branch on bail as part of an investigation into surveillance practices at cosmetic clinics. According to Focus Taiwan, the two individuals are suspected of violating laws concerning sexual privacy, personal privacy, and the Personal Data Protection Act. Li was released on NT$3 million (US$95,000) bail, while Huang was released on NT$500,000 bail. The investigation intensified after prosecutors directed police to search the clinic's Taipei Main Station and Zhongxiao branches, as well as the offices of the Saint Eir Medical Group in Taipei. Investigators seized mobile phones and other evidence, summoning Li and Huang for further questioning. The legal actions were prompted by a report filed on May 8 to the Taipei City Police Department's Zhongzheng First Precinct, following a customer's allegation of being recorded during a treatment session. This ra ised concerns about potential violations of patients' sexual privacy and the possibility of evidence tampering. On May 9, police and the Technological Crime Investigation Unit conducted a search of the clinic, discovering publicly set recording devices in treatment rooms, with cameras positioned to the side of a treatment bed. No hidden cameras or signs of removed recording devices were found in other areas of the clinic. Li was subsequently summoned, accompanied by his lawyer, for questioning and was released on the same day. The case was then referred to the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office, which ordered further searches and evidence collection at the Zhongxiao branch. Saint Eir Medical Group stated on May 9 that all filming during treatment sessions is conducted with explicit customer consent, as outlined in their signed contract. The contract specifies continuous audio and video recording during treatment to prevent potential medical disputes and protect both parties' rights. The clinic is responsi ble for securely storing recordings, retaining them for one month after treatment completion. The investigation into Saint Eir Medical Group follows a similar incident where a hidden camera disguised as a smoke detector was discovered at a branch of Airlee Group Co., Ltd., another cosmetic clinic in Banqiao. As of Thursday, police had searched several cosmetic clinic chains, including Airlee Group, Saint Eir Clinic, Yan Yi Ming Clinic, and Dr. Shine, concerning allegations of recording devices installed in treatment rooms.
