Social Media Post Threatens Similar Attack in Kaohsiung After Taipei Stabbings

Taipei: Police in Kaohsiung are trying to trace a copycat threat that was made on social media Friday after a deadly knife attack in Taipei that left three people dead and several others injured.

According to Focus Taiwan, an anonymous post on the social media platform Threads claimed the suspect in the attack at Taipei Main Station was a “brother” and part of the “same organization.” The user warned that Kaohsiung Main Station would be the next target, intending to continue what the Taipei suspect had “failed to complete.” The post ended with a declaration that the group aimed to “reshape a dysfunctional society.”

The threat is under investigation, with Kaohsiung’s Criminal Investigation Corps working to trace the source of the post. Kaohsiung Main Station serves as a railway and metro hub in the city’s Sanmin District for Taiwan Railway and Kaohsiung Rapid Transit.

The social media post emerged hours after a violent incident at Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Station on Friday evening. The 27-year-old suspect, Chang Wen, used smoke grenades and a knife to attack people randomly, resulting in three deaths and several injuries before he apparently jumped to his death from a multistory building.

Following the threat, Premier Cho Jung-tai announced that efforts to identify the person behind the post would be expedited, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai stated that the city would enhance security at railway, metro, and high-speed rail stations.

Kaohsiung authorities are collaborating with the National Police Agency and other national security units as the investigation progresses, Chen added.
