Sole winner hits Monday’s NT$2.7 billion Power Lottery jackpot

A sole winner hit the jackpot in Taiwan’s Power Lottery on Monday, grabbing the top prize of NT$2.7 billion (US$96.6 million), according to Taiwan Lottery Co.

The winning numbers for Monday’s Power Lottery were 08, 09, 19, 23, 24, 35 in the first section and a special number of 01 in the second section.

The winning first-prize ticket that matched all seven numbers was sold at a lottery store in Sanxia, New Taipei, according to Taiwan Lottery.

Firecrackers were set off in front of the store in celebration after it learned the news, and Lin Yu-ting (???), the co-owner of the lottery shop in Sanxia, said Monday she was happy to see the winning ticket sold in her store.

The winning ticket holder is a frequent visitor and spent NT$3,200 on lottery tickets this time, according to Lin.

The jackpot for the biweekly Power Lottery reached NT$2.7 billion for Monday’s draw after rolling over 41 consecutive times without a winner, the company said.

It was the third-largest jackpot since Taiwan began issuing the Public Welfare Lottery in 1999. The two biggest payouts have been a NT$3.003 billion winning ticket sold in Taichung in April 2015 and a NT$2.87 billion winning ticket sold in Taipei in September 2015.

The first-prize winning ticket holder will actually collect NT$2.16 billion after paying a 20 percent tax on the lottery winnings, according to the company.

Meanwhile, four winning tickets matched the six numbers in the first section of the draw to each win over NT$16.70 million in prize money.
