U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will visit Beijing next week for talks with China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, to discuss bilateral ties, North Korea, the South China Sea, the Middle East and other issues, a senior administration official said Friday. Sullivan is set to visit the Chinese capital from Tuesday to Thursday, the official said, as Washington has been striving to maintain open channels of communication with Beijing to "responsibly" manage the two countries' intensifying competition. "Mr. Sullivan will raise U.S. concerns about China's support for Russia's defense industrial base, the South China Sea and various other issues," the official said in an online press briefing. "I expect the two will also exchange views on other global issues, like the DPRK, the Middle East and Burma, and I expect they will also discuss cross-strait issues," the official added. DPRK stands for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Sullivan and the Chinese foreign minister ha ve met four times over the last year and a half, including meetings in Vienna and Malta last year. Their planned meeting comes as the U.S. has been stably managing Sino-U.S. relations ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election. Source: Yonhap News Agency
