Sunset Rollercoaster Wins Best Band at Golden Melody Awards

Taipei: Taiwanese indie band Sunset Rollercoaster won Best Band at the 37th Golden Melody Awards on Saturday for "Quit Quietly," marking the group's second win in the category.

According to Focus Taiwan, the band prevailed over fellow nominees Icyball, Outlet Drift, Your Woman Sleep With Others, Accusefive, Sweet John, and Tizzy Bac. "For us, being in a band is kind of like five straight guys raising a child together in a nontraditional family. Our baby is the music we create, and we carefully nurture it while hoping it grows up to be free," said vocalist Tseng Kuo-hung.

"When an album is finished, it feels like your child is leaving home to face the world. We hope this album can bring a little more gentleness and tranquility into the world," he added.

Widely regarded as one of Taiwan's most internationally recognized bands, Sunset Rollercoaster has built a global following through its distinctive blend of city pop, album-oriented rock, psychedelic rock, and jazz-inflected sounds.

With its fifth studio album, "Quit Quietly," the band further refined the laid-back aesthetic that has become its trademark, while collaborations with several prominent musicians added depth and texture to the album. The release followed years of growing international acclaim for the group.

In 2020, British music magazine NME ranked Sunset Rollercoaster's album "Soft Storm" among the best Asian albums of the year, helping cement the band's reputation beyond Taiwan.

Saturday's award marks another milestone for Sunset Rollercoaster, whose genre-defying sound and international appeal have made the group one of the most influential acts in contemporary Taiwanese music.
