Suspect who killed 2 police arrested after manhunt

A man suspected of killing two police officers in the southern city of Tainan Monday was arrested in northern Taiwan early Tuesday following an overnight, nationwide manhunt.

The suspect, identified as Lin Hsin-wu (???), was caught at a bus station on Jincheng 1st Road in northern Taiwan’s Hsinchu City at 4:36 a.m., Tainan police said.

The suspect, in his 40s, is a fugitive who escaped from the Mingde Minimum-Security Prison in Tainan, police said.

After killing the two police officers, he fled to Kaohsiung before taking a vehicle to northern Taiwan, police said. The suspect was found with a gun and 18 bullets belonging to one of the killed policemen when he was caught, according to the police.

Lin was taken into custody by police for questioning, and authorities are expected to hold a press conference at 8:30 a.m. to give more details about the case.

The two police officers in Tainan — Tu Ming-cheng (???), 36, and Tsao Jui-chieh (???), 27 — died of serious stab wounds after being attacked while pursuing Lin, who is suspected of stealing a motorcycle in the city’s Annan District on Monday morning.

Another officer who arrived on the scene found the two laying in a pool of blood without any vital signs, Tainan Police Department head Fang Yang-ning (???) said at a news conference later Monday.

The two were taken to two hospitals in the city, where they were declared dead, Tainan police said.
