Taipei, The Taipei Fubon Braves outhustled the Taoyuan Pilots Saturday, winning 109-71 in the second game of the “2020 Fubon Cup Braves Basketball Tournament,” which is also the second round of P.LEAGUE+ preseason games.
Backed by an all-star line up, the Braves dominated the scoring from the early moments of the game, leading 61-33 at half time with Braves American forward Michael Singletary, one of the most recent additions to the team roster, causing damage in the paint with his physical prowess.
Standing at 198 centimeters tall, Singletary led Thailand’s Mono Vampires to the top of the standings in the regional ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) earlier this year before the team pulled out of the league in April due the COVID-19 pandemic.
The league’s 2019-2020 season was forced to end early without a winner because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, Braves center Ukrainian import Ihor Zaytsev, who is 211cm tall, was the team’s primary low-post scorer, with 18 points in the game.
However it was local favorite, Taiwan national team guard Lin Chih-chieh (林志傑) who excited the crowd every time he took possession. The screams and cheers of fans filled the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium when Lin sunk a basket from beyond the arc in the third quarter.
The pace started to pick up in the last quarter as the Pilots attempted to make a come back, but they proved unable to get through the Fubon defense.
The game ended 109-71 with the Braves victorious at the final buzzer.
Singletary, who recently played his first official game with the Braves, commended the team, which he played against in the ABL when he was a Mono Vampires player earlier in the year.
“The team is just loaded with talent, a lot of guys can do a lot of multiple things. It makes my job easy and it’s always good whenever you have multiple guys who can play, and can make shots and score in the post too,” Singletary said.
When asked about the P.LEAGUE+, Singletary said he was excited about the league, which is one of few in the world that allows fans because of the current COVID-19 situation.
“I think they are doing a great job, I mean from the marketing and everything they are doing with the league, the promotion, all of it is amazing, they are doing a great job,” Singletary said. “It will be big time for Taiwan basketball and I am excited to be a part of it.”
It was the Braves’ second win against the Pilots in the preseason, following a 75-67 victory on Oct. 17 in Hsinchu.
The 2020 Fubon Cup basketball tournament will continue Sunday and is the second round of P.LEAGUE+ preseason games before the season officially starts on Dec. 19, with the Dreamers against the Braves, in Changhua County Stadium, the opening game.
The P.LEAGUE+, which was formed earlier this year with four teams, is one of two domestic basketball leagues in Taiwan.
