Taipei Metro Installs Memorial Plaque Honoring Heroic Act of Yu Chia-chang

Taipei: Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC) announced on Tuesday the installation of a permanent memorial plaque to honor Yu Chia-chang, a man who lost his life while attempting to stop an attacker at Taipei Main Station last month. The plaque has been strategically placed on a wall along the underground passage leading to Exit M8 at Taipei Main Station.

According to Focus Taiwan, the unveiling ceremony of the memorial plaque was attended by Taipei Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-hua, TRTC Chairman Chao Shiao-lien, and several other officials. The plaque is headlined "Memorial to Mr. Yu Chia-chang's Heroic Sacrifice" and narrates the incident in both Chinese and English, acknowledging Yu's selfless bravery in saving others.

Yu, a resident of Taoyuan, was gravely wounded and subsequently died after trying to prevent 27-year-old Chang Wen from causing further harm. Chang had thrown smoke grenades inside MRT Taipei Main Station and stabbed bystanders near MRT Zhongshan Station on December 19 of the previous year. Following the attack, Chang fell to his death from the roof of a nearby department store while being pursued by police.

The plaque honors Yu's courage, stating, "His righteous deed moves us deeply, and his spirit will live on in our hearts forever." TRTC has also reminded the public that the memorial plaque is situated along a main passageway and urged visitors not to place flowers or other items at the site to maintain safety and accessibility.
