Taipei: Rides on Taipei Metro's newly extended Red Line, connecting Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station to Xiangshan Station, will be free from August 30 to September 28, Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC) announced on Thursday. According to Focus Taiwan, the fare exemption applies exclusively to the section between Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station and Xiangshan Station. Passengers starting or ending their journey at the new terminus will not incur charges for the distance traveled between these two stations. However, fares will still apply on all other sections of the Taipei Metro network. The TRTC specified that discounted rides within the promotion period will contribute to the Taipei Metro's frequent rider program, which offers fare rebates for frequent travel, though this program does not extend to the free rides. Passengers traveling solely between the newly extended stations can obtain a special entry credential at the information counter to travel without a fare. To commemorate the opening of the new sta tion, TRTC will host a capsule toy draw from August 30 to September 2. Prizes in the draw include round-trip tickets for two to London or Tokyo and a Megacity Pass valued at NT$1,200 (approximately US$37.67). Eligibility for the draw requires passengers to begin or end their journey at Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station, using payment methods other than a single-journey token. The capsule toy machine, located at Exit 2 of the station, will allow one participation per passenger per day, with 600 capsules available daily. Operating hours will be from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on August 30, and from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily from August 31 to September 2. The machine may close earlier if all capsules are claimed. In addition to the capsule draw, eligible passengers can enter a separate prize draw for annual MRT passes, metro credit, and bicycles. TRTC will also distribute 500 Fami!ce gift cards daily at the B2 level information counter, limited to one card per person per day. The opening festivities include concerts at the station every Saturday afternoon from August 30 through September 19. Construction of Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station started in 2016, extending the Red Line by 1.4 kilometers beneath Section 6 of Xinyi Road, thus linking the Xiangshan and Hushan areas. The Red Line, also referred to as the Tamsui-Xinyi Line, now spans 29 kilometers with 28 stations, stretching from Tamsui in New Taipei to Xiangshan in southeast Taipei.
