Taipei: Taipei police said Saturday that they have obtained a laptop computer and a cellphone belonging to the suspect in Friday’s random stabbing attack in Taipei, which left three people dead and several others injured. The laptop and the cellphone, which appeared to be an old one not in use, were found during a search of the suspect’s family home in Yangmei District, Taoyuan, early Saturday, police said.
According to Focus Taiwan, the 27-year-old suspect, Chang Wen, threw smoke grenades in Taipei Main Station on Friday and stabbed one person who later died. He then continued his attack at the nearby Zhongshan Station. Police reported that Chang allegedly fell to his death from the sixth floor of the Eslite Spectrum Nanxi building.
Chang, an unemployed former security guard, had rented a residence in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, in January. Police noted that he also rented a hotel room on Nanjing West Road just two days before the attack on that same street. Inside his residence, investigators discovered materials typically used for making Molotov cocktails.
The search of Chang’s family home in a gated community in Taoyuan followed police posting a guard in the area and taking Chang’s parents to Taipei for questioning. Authorities noted that when Chang’s parents left the Zhongshan First Police Station, they declined to speak to the media and were escorted back to their home.
After securing a warrant, police searched the residence and informed reporters that Chang had not been living there for a long time. Investigators found only a few relevant items, including a laptop and an old cellphone. Police added that Chang had been out of touch with his parents for quite some time.
