Taipei to Deploy 1,300 Police Officers for New Year’s Eve Event

Taipei: The Taipei City Police Department announced plans to enhance security for the New Year's Eve celebration in front of Taipei City Hall by deploying over 1,300 officers and two explosive-detection dogs. This decision follows a recent attack earlier this month.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Dec. 19 attack at MRT Taipei Main Station and MRT Zhongshan Station resulted in four deaths, including the attacker, and left 11 individuals injured. In response, several arrests have been made nationwide concerning online threats of similar attacks.

Lee Hsien-tsang, chief of the department's Xinyi Precinct, stated at a press conference that 27 rapid-response teams equipped with ammunition, tasers, and protective gear will be on standby for emergencies. Additionally, the precinct has requested support from 40 officers from the National Police Agency's Special Operations Group for inspections and patrols.

To mitigate the risk of crowd crushes, 15 crowd-control teams will be deployed in busy areas, equipped with megaphones, loudspeakers, and drones. These teams will manage incidents of jostling or falls and coordinate with medical units when needed. Lee added that unauthorized drones would be grounded to ensure airspace safety.

The main stage's broadcast system will be used by the police to direct evacuations during major emergencies. Traffic restrictions will be lifted progressively post-event, and additional patrols will manage the crowds in the Xinyi Shopping District.

Command and lighting vehicles will be positioned at the venue, with large police vehicles securing the perimeter against threats like vehicle-ramming attacks. The possession of drugs, bladed objects, firearms, and explosives is strictly prohibited, Lee emphasized.

In parallel, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. plans to increase patrols and surveillance at key stations. They will also intensify drills for indiscriminate attacks and initiate standard operating procedures if severe safety incidents occur. The corporation urged passengers to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and adhere to evacuation instructions when necessary.
