Taipei tourist to Taitung hits NT$330-million Grand Lottery jackpot

A man in his 20s has won the Grand Lottery top prize of NT$330 million (US$10.85 million) with a ticket he bought on a family trip to Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan during the Jan. 20-29 Lunar New Year (LNY) holiday, Taiwan Lottery Co. said Tuesday.

The top prize-winning ticket was sold by a lottery ticket store on Yanwan Road in Taitung City, and the winning numbers, which were announced on Jan. 29, were 27, 02, 09, 15, 08 and 31, plus the special number 42, according to the company.

The winner was a 20-something man from a family of four residing in Taipei. They traveled to Taitung for the LNY holiday, during which they spent NT$500 to buy 10 Grand Lottery tickets with numbers chosen by the system, the company’s spokesperson Hsieh Chih-hung (???) said.

Hsieh recalled that when he met the young man as the latter showed up to claim the prize, Hsieh asked him out of curiosity if he had any tips on securing a jackpot. The man confidently replied, “I’m a man of fortune.”

The lucky man also told him that he had not yet decided how he was going to use the big fortune he had just won, Hsieh added.

Also on Tuesday, the company announced that its sales during the 10-day LNY holiday reached approximately NT$46.2 billion, representing an increase of nearly 12 percent from 2022.

About NT$40.9 billion, or 88.5 percent of the sales came from scratch lotteries while the rest was from computer-based lottery programs, the company said.
