Houston: The Taiwan Academy in Houston is preparing to present a series of arts and cultural events this fall, highlighting award-winning Taiwanese films and contemporary performances that reflect Taiwan's values on gender identity and equality. According to Focus Taiwan, the academy revealed through a recent press release that it will partner with arts institutions and universities across Texas from September to November for a fall-themed exhibition tentatively called "Taiwanese Sensibility in Texas." The scheduled events will include screenings of acclaimed Taiwanese films by directors Hou Hsiao-hsien, Ang Lee, and Malaysia-based Tsai Ming-liang. These screenings will take place at three major arts and cultural cinemas in Houston, showcasing five selected works from these esteemed filmmakers. In addition to film screenings, renowned drag queen Nymphia Wind will be speaking at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts (MFAH) on September 24. Nymphia Wind, who gained prominence as the first Taiwanese drag queen to wi n "RuPaul's Drag Race," will participate in a dialogue with Bradley Bailey, the museum's curator of Asian art. She will share insights into her formative years in Taiwan, her early exposure to performing arts, and her use of performance art and social advocacy to express her identity. Furthermore, the showcase will feature performances by award-winning musician Yuhan Su and presentations by Hong Kong writer Gigi L. Leung, whose work "Everyday Movement" has garnered multiple awards in Taiwan's literary circles. The Taiwan Academy's initiative promises to offer a rich blend of cultural experiences, reflecting Taiwan's vibrant arts scene and progressive social values.
