Taipei: Taiwan and Japan will kick off a series of cross border listings of exchange-traded funds this month, the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) said Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Cathay Securities Investment Trust Co. has worked with Daiwa Asset Management to launch the iFree Cathay Taiwan Tech Leaders Index ETF on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Sept. 12, which will track Cathay Taiwan Technology Leader ETF. Nomura Asset Management Taiwan has teamed up with Nomura Asset Management to list the NEXT FUNDS-Nomura TOPIX Feeder ETF in Taiwan on Sept. 18, which will track Japan’s NEXT FUNDS TOPIX-linked Exchange Traded Fund. Nomura will list another ETF in Japan on Sept. 18 to track NEXT FUNDS-Nomura Taiwan Innovative Technology 50 ETF.
Since Taiwan listed its first ETF, Yuanta/P-shares Taiwan Top 50 ETF, in 2003, the TWSE said Taiwan ranks third in ETF market size in the Asia Pacific region. As of the end of August, 294 ETFs were listed on the main board and the OTC market with assets of NT$6.77 trillion (US$220 billion). That total represents more than a 30-fold increase from a decade earlier, compared with a global average increase of 540 percent over the same period.
The TWSE said cross border ETF listings between Taipei and Tokyo are expected to raise the capital market’s visibility internationally and serve as a step toward making Taiwan an asset management hub in the region. After the cooperation with Japan, the exchange said it will pursue similar listings and other financial products in the region and seek to expand cooperation beyond the region. The TWSE said the moves are expected to help the Taiwanese securities sector develop international connections and introduce products that will strengthen the sector’s competitiveness.
