Taipei: United States representative to Taiwan Raymond Greene announced new measures to enhance bilateral cooperation on semiconductor workforce development. At an event in Taipei, Greene highlighted initiatives aimed at expanding educational pathways to cultivate talent in both nations. According to Focus Taiwan, Greene, who serves as the director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), made these remarks during the Freedom 250 Workforce First Summit. The summit, organized by AIT, gathered 150 leaders from government, industry, and academia from both the U.S. and Taiwan to bolster cooperation in workforce development. Greene revealed two initiatives to encourage more American students to study high-tech fields in Taiwan. One initiative involves a US$20 million private donation to the University of Arizona to support students in study-abroad programs, potentially in Taiwan. The second initiative will bring two additional graduate students to National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in 2027 through the U. S. government-funded Fulbright Semiconductor Scholarship program. "These actions and programs serve as a powerful catalyst, a source of inspiration for other institutions here today to develop their own institutional and financial incentives and academic pathways to ensure today's rising talents become the next generation of leaders in critical institutions," Greene stated. Taiwan's Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao also addressed the summit. He emphasized that welcoming American students allows them to learn directly from Taiwan's educators, researchers, engineers, industry experts, and students. Cheng noted that this interaction is mutually beneficial, as Taiwanese students gain international perspectives by learning alongside their American peers. During the summit, a memorandum of intent was signed between the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan and the U.S.-based SEMI Foundation. This agreement aims to promote closer cooperation between the two organizations. The Tai pei-based foundation supports international cooperation in Taiwan's higher education sector, while the SEMI Foundation focuses on strengthening the global semiconductor talent pipeline through workforce development programs.
