Taiwan Approves Major Semiconductor Investments by ASML and Sumitomo

Taipei: Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has approved six significant investment cases, including a capital injection of NT$2.62 billion (US$81.1 million) by Dutch firm ASML and a NT$2.27 billion investment increase by Japan’s Sumitomo Corp., both focused on semiconductor-related manufacturing.

According to Focus Taiwan, these investments are part of three inbound foreign investments totaling NT$13.6 billion and three outbound investments totaling US$999 million that received approval during an investment review meeting held by the MOEA. ASML Holding N.V.’s investment will increase capital in Cymer, Inc., a company involved in the installation, sales, and maintenance of laser light source equipment and semiconductor components. Meanwhile, Sumitomo Corp. plans to inject NT$2.27 billion into Sumitronics Taiwan Co., Ltd., aiming to expand its import and export business in semiconductor materials and electronic components.

Additionally, Stonepeak Oceanview (Cayman) Holdings Co. plans to invest NT$8.75 billion into Stonepeak Oceanview Taiwan Co., Ltd., with NT$8.3 billion allocated to further invest in Formosa 2 Development Co., Ltd., a company engaged in wind power generation.

On the outbound side, Acer Inc. will acquire 100 percent equity of Embedded City Ltd., Cayman Islands, for US$86.05 million, thereby indirectly gaining shares in Taiwan-based Posiflex Technology, Inc., which is involved in industrial computing and other operations. Yageo Corp. intends to acquire up to 100 percent of Japan’s Shibaura Electronics Co., Ltd. through a public tender valued at approximately 77.8 billion Japanese yen (US$521.7 million), focusing on the thermistor sensor manufacturing sector. Lastly, ASMedia Technology Inc. plans to acquire 100 percent of U.S.-based Techpoint, Inc. for US$391 million to expand its integrated circuit design business.
