Taiwan athletes win 2 bronze medals at Asian Karate Championships

Taiwan’s Gu Shiau-shuang (???) and Wu Chun-wei (???) won bronze medals at the 2021 Asian Karate Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

Gu overcame Sara Bahmanyar of Iran 8-4 to win her third Asian Karate Championships bronze in a row in the women’s kumite under-50kg event.

In 2018, Gu, a member of the indigenous Bunun tribe in Nantou County, central Taiwan, won a bronze medal in the women’s kumite under-50kg event at the Asian Karate Championships held in Amman, Jordan.

She repeated the achievement in 2019 by again winning bronze at the Asian Karate Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 24-year-old won the gold medal in the women’s under-50kg event at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Gu’s coach Deng Shih-yu (???) attributed her victory to her precise and thorough execution of their strategic plan.

Gu maintained the proper distance that prevented her opponent from effectively unleashing attacks on her, Deng added.

Meanwhile, Wu won Taiwan’s second medal at the Almaty Asian Karate Championships on Tuesday by clinching a bronze in the men’s under-84kg category.

Also Taiwan’s karateka, Chao Jou (??) failed to secure a medal in the women’s under-68kg event after losing to her Vietnamese opponent 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

The 2021 Asian Karate Championships runs for four days from Dec. 19-22, with about 500 athletes from 23 countries in Asia participating.
