Taipei: Taiwanese paddlers achieved a historic victory by defeating China 3-2 in the men's team table tennis final at the 2025 Summer World University Games. This triumph marks Taiwan's first gold medal in this event.
According to Focus Taiwan, the men's team table tennis competition at the World University Games follows a best-of-five singles format. The victorious Taiwanese team comprised Feng Yi-hsin, Kao Cheng-jui, and Huang Yan-cheng. In a gripping series of matches, 22-year-old Feng opened the contest by defeating Chen Junsong 3-1, giving Taiwan an early lead.
However, China's Sun Zheng leveled the score by overcoming Kao Cheng-jui 3-1 in the second match. Huang Yan-cheng then restored Taiwan's advantage by defeating Zeng Beixun 3-1 in the third match. The fourth match saw Kao falter again, losing to Chen, which brought the score to a tense 2-2 tie. In a decisive final match, Feng clinched the victory for Taiwan by defeating Sun Zheng, securing a 3-2 win.
This victory represents Taiwan's first-ever men's team gold at the University Games, surpassing their previous best of a silver medal. Feng described the win as surreal and credited his teammates' support for boosting his confidence during the final match. Huang expressed that winning gold was their ultimate goal, while Kao, reflecting on his performance, expressed gratitude towards his teammates for realizing this dream. Coach Chu Yen-hui acknowledged the team's balanced lineup and emphasized Feng's crucial role in securing the gold medal.
