Taipei: Taiwan secured three silver medals at the World University Games in Germany on Sunday, placing second in badminton mixed team event, taekwondo, and swimming.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiwanese badminton team faced China in the best-of-five finals, with Chen Zhi-ray and Lin Yu-chieh losing to Cui Hechen and Peng Jianqin, giving China an early lead. Wang Pei-yu also faced defeat in the singles match against Yuan Anqi, resulting in a 0-2 deficit for Taiwan. Despite Su Li-yang winning the third match, China clinched the victory at 3-1. Team coach Feng Sheng-chieh highlighted the significance of the opening match and expressed regret over not securing the gold.
Taiwan had a strong history in the badminton mixed team event, winning gold at the 2017 Taipei Universiade and defending the title in 2019 at the university games in Naples, Italy, as well as at the 2021 Chengdu Universiade.
Hung Jiun-yi, a newcomer to the World University Games and a student at National Changhua University of Education, earned a silver medal in the men's 80kg taekwondo final, after a 1-2 loss to South Korea's Seo Geonwoo.
In swimming, Wang Kuan-hung secured silver in the men's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:55.85, narrowly missing gold by 0.26 seconds to Jack Andrew Dahlgren of the United States. Despite his strong performance, Wang expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that his goal was gold but acknowledged his achievement of securing a podium finish.
