Taiwan defeats Puerto Rico 9-0 at U-15 Baseball World Cup

Taiwan clinched a 9-0 victory over Puerto Rico in their opening WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup Super Round game in Hermosillo, Mexico Wednesday.

Taiwan, competing under the name Chinese Taipei, only allowed two hits over seven innings, with starting pitcher Chang Yao-yun (???) carrying a no-hitter into the fifth that was eventually broken by an infield hit from Puerto Rican outfielder Dylan Rivera.

Taiwan dominated out of the gate, scoring five runs in the first inning at the Estadio Sonora, and produced with one more run in the third and two more in the fifth before capping things off with one last run in the sixth.

With the latest win, Taiwan evened its Super Round record to 1-1, as it carried over a head-to-head loss to Cuba in the Opening Round. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is down to 0-2.

Taiwan will next face Japan at the Estadio Sonora Thursday evening local time.

The WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico started with 13 teams placed in three groups competing in a round-robin format. The top two teams of each group advanced to the Super Round, while the other seven national teams will compete for placement.

The other teams currently in the Super Round are Panama and the United States. The finals are slated to be held on Sept. 4

The biennial WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, Taiwan finished third, behind the United States and Panama.
