Kingstown: The Taiwanese government has donated US$3 million to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to bolster its social relief initiatives, as announced by Taiwan's embassy to the Caribbean ally. The generous donation was officially handed over by Ambassador Fiona Fan to SVG Prime Minister Godwin Friday during a ceremony held on Tuesday. According to Focus Taiwan, Prime Minister Friday expressed gratitude on behalf of his government and the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for Taiwan's support. He highlighted that the grant represents a crucial "investment in people" of the Caribbean nation, aimed at addressing community needs and strengthening social institutions across the country. However, specific details on the utilization of the funds were not provided by either party. Furthermore, Prime Minister Friday reiterated his government's commitment to deepening cooperation with Taiwan. He emphasized plans to develop SVG's "blue economy," which encompasses ocean-based economic activities, throu gh leveraging Taiwan's expertise in the fishing and agricultural sectors. Friday, who assumed office in November 2025 after his New Democratic Party (NDP) ended the 24-year rule of the Unity Labour Party, has maintained that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will uphold diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, a relationship established in 1981.
