Brussels: Taiwan's new envoy to the European Union and Belgium, Shieh Jhy-wey, has pledged to fully dedicate himself to his new role. "Entrusted with the president's order, I will, as always, give my utmost," said Shieh, who had served as Taiwan's de facto ambassador to Germany for nine years until Aug. 1, in a social media post Thursday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Shieh reflected on his years of service in Berlin, highlighting the efforts he and his team made at the Taipei Representative Office to deepen the German society's understanding of Taiwan's security significance due to their shared values, cultural exchanges, and technological cooperation. His comments followed shortly after the release of a presidential decree confirming his new assignment.
Shieh, aged 70, possesses a doctorate in German literature from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. He was first appointed as Taiwan's representative to Germany in May 2005, serving for two years, before resuming the post from 2016 to 2025. Before his posting to Germany, Shieh led the now-disbanded Government Information Office under the Executive Yuan.
Reports indicate that Shieh's previous position will be filled by the current Taiwanese representative to Sweden, Gu Ruey-sheng.
