Taiwan finishes 3rd at U-15 Baseball World Cup after Japan forfeit

Taiwan was awarded third place at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico after COVID-19 withdrawals left Japan unable to field a full side in Sunday’s bronze medal match.

Taiwan, competing under the name Chinese Taipei, secured their second consecutive third-place finish at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup with Sunday’s 7-0 walkover win.

The bronze medalists had already defeated Japan at this year’s tournament, scoring a 6-4 comeback win in the round-robin Super Round on Sept. 1.

The bronze is Chinese Taipei’s fourth at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup and their second in a row after beating Japan at the previous edition of the tournament in Panama in 2018.

The biennial WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sunday’s bronze is also Taiwan’s 10th medal of any kind at the U-15 Baseball World Cup, having won one gold and five silvers, in addition to four bronze.

The 2022 WBSC Baseball World Cup was won by the United States, which defeated Cuba in the World Championship Final 4-3 to win a second consecutive title.
