Taiwan Issues Sea Warning as Typhoon Fung-Wong Approaches

Taipei: The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a sea warning for Typhoon Fung-Wong, effective from 5:30 p.m., forecasting that the storm will make landfall in Taiwan on Wednesday. A land warning is anticipated to be issued Tuesday morning.

According to Focus Taiwan, as of 5 p.m. Monday, Fung-Wong was positioned approximately 490 kilometers south-southwest of Eluanbi, Taiwan’s southernmost tip. The typhoon was advancing west-northwest at a speed of 13 kph, with maximum sustained winds reaching up to 137 kph and gusts up to 173 kph.

CWA forecaster Lin Ping-yu reported that Fung-Wong has slightly intensified over the past three hours and is likely to affect waters near Dongsha Island, the Bashi Channel, and the southern Taiwan Strait, with a potential increase in intensity. The typhoon, alongside the influence of northeasterly winds, is projected to bring heavy rain Monday night and Tuesday to the Keelung north coast, Greater Taipei, eastern Taiwan, and the Hengchun Peninsula.

Extremely heavy to torrential rainfall is anticipated in mountainous areas of Greater Taipei and eastern Taiwan. The CWA is expected to issue a land warning from Tuesday morning, Lin indicated. Fung-Wong is predicted to pass over Taiwan on Wednesday, with central and southern Taiwan, Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu likely to experience scattered showers and possible heavy or torrential rain.

Northern Taiwan, Yilan, and outlying islands, including Kinmen and Matsu, are forecasted to encounter brief showers. Even after the typhoon departs on Thursday, significant rainfall may persist in northern Taiwan, according to Lin.

Strong gusts are expected in open coastal areas and offshore islands during the typhoon, with coastal waves exceeding 3 meters and possibly reaching up to 6 meters in southern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, southeastern regions, and the outlying islands of Penghu.

In response to the approaching typhoon, the Kinmen Harbor Bureau announced on Monday that ferry services between Kinmen and the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Quanzhou will be suspended in both directions on Tuesday.
