Taiwan Ousted from WBC as South Korea Triumphs Over Australia

Taipei: Taiwan's hopes at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) were dashed following South Korea's 7-2 victory over Australia, which secured South Korea's advancement under the tournament's tiebreaker rules.

According to Focus Taiwan, the outcome resulted in a three-way tie between Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia for the second position in WBC Pool C, each holding a 2-2 record behind the undefeated leader, Japan. The advancement was determined by a tiebreaker, which calculated runs allowed in relation to defensive outs among the tied teams. Despite all three teams allowing seven runs, South Korea advanced because it recorded a total of 57 outs, surpassing Taiwan and Australia, which each recorded 54 outs.

Taiwan's performance in the tournament was hindered by its initial 3-0 loss to Australia, where the team managed only three hits. This game, in which Taiwan recorded 24 outs, was critical in the tiebreaker calculation. A single additional run scored or fewer runs allowed by Taiwan could have altered the final outcome.

Despite a significant 13-0 defeat to Japan under the mercy rule, Taiwan managed a 14-0 victory over the Czech Republic and a 5-4 win against South Korea in 10 innings, briefly raising hopes for advancement. However, Taiwan's journey ended with its elimination, marking the sixth WBC appearance where the team has only progressed to the quarterfinals once, in 2013.

Japan, having already secured the top position in Pool C, will conclude its group stage against the Czech Republic.
