Munich: Badminton players from Taiwan secured three of the four medals in the mixed doubles event at this year’s World University Games in Germany on Saturday. Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan-yi and Yang Chu-yun claimed the gold after overcoming fellow Taiwanese shuttlers Chen Cheng-kuan and Hsu Yin-hui in the finals with straight game wins of 15-8, 17-15.
According to Focus Taiwan, Wu and Yang maintained their momentum after defeating Chinese opponents Li Qian and Liao Pinyi in the semifinals, bringing their best performance to the finals. In the first game, Wu and Yang’s drive was unstoppable. However, Chen and Hsu found their rhythm in the second game, making a significant comeback as they overtook Wu and Yang at one point, even managing to earn two game points.
Despite the pressure, Wu and Yang fended off the challenge and rallied to secure the second game and the match. This victory marked Taiwan’s second consecutive mixed doubles badminton gold at the World University Games.
In addition to Wu and Yang’s gold and Chen and Hsu’s silver, Taiwanese shuttlers Lin Yu-chieh and Jheng Yu-chieh also contributed to the medal tally by taking bronze. They secured the bronze after falling to Chen and Hsu in the mixed doubles semifinals.
