Taipei: Taiwan's four-member team emerged victorious at the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, securing one gold medal, two silver medals, and an honorable mention, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Sunday. The annual programming competition for school students saw participation from 375 students across 92 countries and regions.
According to Focus Taiwan, the gold medal was claimed by Li Po-ting from Tainan First Senior High School, who achieved an impressive eighth-place finish overall. The silver medals were awarded to Lin Chi-you and Huang Yu-lun, both from Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School, who placed 56th and 77th, respectively. Additionally, Liao Yu-hsiang from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School received an honorable mention, placing 200th.
The awards were presented during the closing ceremony on Saturday, with the Taiwanese students distinguishing themselves among a competitive international field. As per MOE regulations, Taiwanese students who earn medals at international academic Olympiads are entitled to cash rewards of NT$200,000 (US$6,169) for a gold medal, NT$100,000 for a silver medal, and NT$50,000 for a bronze medal. Furthermore, medalists are eligible for direct admission to relevant university departments or may gain entry to any academic program through recommendation-based admission.
