Amsterdam: Taiwanese guavas have hit the European market for the first time after the European Union approved their import earlier this year, with Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che present to promote the fruit, the launch was facilitated after Taiwan met stringent sanitary requirements, securing a permit from the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission in June to export its mangoes and guavas to the EU.
According to Focus Taiwan, the initial shipment size of guavas to Europe was not specified by Huang, and Taiwan’s International Trade Administration database did not record any guavas exported to Europe through October 2025. However, Huang expressed his delight at the market entry of Taiwanese guavas during his visit to a market in Amsterdam, indicating that the fruit’s availability would be appreciated by the Taiwanese community in Europe, including students.
Several customers purchasing the fruit were of Taiwanese origin, such as Winnie, who has lived in Europe for over 40 years and expressed excitement at seeing Taiwanese fruit available in the Netherlands. She purchased guavas and pineapples and expressed hope for the future availability of other Taiwanese fruits like mangoes and wax apples.
Taiwan’s representative to the Netherlands, Tien Chung-kwang, noted the strong economic ties between Taiwan and the Netherlands and suggested that the country could act as a gateway for Taiwanese fruit into broader European markets.
Prior to his visit to Amsterdam, Huang and his delegation traveled to France, where they engaged with wholesale fruit distributors at the Rungis wholesale market near Paris to discuss the sale of Taiwanese fresh fruit in France. During the visit, Huang also promoted various processed foods from Tainan, such as dried fruits, shrimp crackers, buckwheat tea, dry noodles, and specialty drinks and desserts.
