Taiwanese Sharpshooter Liu Wan-yu Wins Gold at 2026 Asian Shotgun Championship

Doha: Taiwanese sharpshooter Liu Wan-yu captured the gold medal in the women's trap event at the 2026 Asian Shotgun Championship on Tuesday. Following her individual success, Liu, alongside Olympian Lin I-chun and 22-year-old Yeh Mei-hsuan, secured a silver medal in the Trap Women Team event. According to Focus Taiwan, more than 200 athletes from 17 countries are participating in the championship held in Doha, with Taiwan fielding a team of 13 shooters across both professional and junior divisions. The Taiwanese trio scored a cumulative 316 points in the team event, earning them a silver medal, while Kazakhstan claimed gold with a score of 325. In the individual trap competition, Liu, who had initially ranked seventh during the preliminary rounds, advanced to the final where she outperformed Eleonora Ibragimova of Kazakhstan to clinch the gold. Liu noted that her performance was initially inconsistent, but she managed to adjust her stance and regain her rhythm, which helped her secure the top spot. Liu men tioned that the competitors were still getting accustomed to this year's new final-round format. A conversation with her coach helped her settle down and focus, leading to her victory. She humorously remarked that her triumph continued a streak of early-year wins by Taiwanese athletes, referencing victories by Lin Yun-ju in table tennis and Lin Chun-yi in badminton. Looking ahead, Liu aims to maintain her current form and peak at the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. Meanwhile, Lin I-chun commended her teammates' efforts in the team event and expressed her determination to improve her performance as she continues to recover from a leg injury. In another event, Taiwanese shooter Yang Kun-pi participated in the men's skeet competition. Despite entering the final ranked third, Yang narrowly missed a podium finish, ultimately placing fourth.
