Taiwanese Singer Wang Wei-hao Indicted for Military Service Evasion

Taipei:Taiwanese singer Wang Wei-hao has been indicted on charges related to evading military service. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of at least two years and two months, as reported by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office.

According to Focus Taiwan, Wang was deemed fit for regular military service following a mandatory physical examination in 2008. In Taiwan, male citizens are typically required to undergo this examination at the age of 19, unless they have an education deferment.

Prosecutors allege that in May 2012, Wang paid over NT$100,000 (approximately US$3,075) to an unidentified intermediary to help him obtain an exemption from military service. Through the intermediary, Wang reportedly secured a diagnosis of hypertension, which ultimately led to his exemption.

This indictment is part of a broader investigation into entertainers suspected of illegally avoiding military service in Taiwan. Prosecutors claim Wang used fraudulent means to change his military-service classification, violating the Punishment Act for Violation to the Military Service System.

They emphasized that Wang's alleged use of deception and false medical documentation undermines the fairness of Taiwan's conscription system. Given that the statutory period of military service at the time was one year and ten months, prosecutors urged the court to impose a serious sentence to maintain the deterrent effect of punishment.
