Berlin: Taiwanese-Swedish gymnast Tonya Helene Paulsson made history Friday by winning bronze in the women's all-around artistic gymnastics at the World University Games in Germany, marking Taiwan's first medal in women's artistic gymnastics at the Games.
According to Focus Taiwan, Paulsson, born to a Swedish father and Taiwanese mother, is a 21-year-old UC Berkeley student who participates under her Chinese name, Chen Jui-an. She chose to represent Taiwan in her debut appearance at the World University Games.
During Friday's final, which featured events such as vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise, Paulsson scored a total of 52.065 points, securing the bronze medal behind Japan's Mana Okamura and Shoko Miyata.
In the men's all-around final, Taiwanese gymnast Chuang Chia-lung finished in 10th place with a total score of 78.265, missing out on a podium finish. Chuang, a student at Fu Jen Catholic University, also made his debut at the World University Games.
