Taiwanese Tennis Players Suffer Defeats on Day 9 of Australian Open

Melbourne: Taiwanese tennis players Hsieh Su-wei (???) and Chan Hao-ching (???) faced defeats separately in the Australian Open on Monday.

According to Focus Taiwan, Hsieh and her Polish partner, Jan Zielinski, were ousted in the second round of the mixed doubles category, losing 6-4, 6-4 to the duo of Jackson Withrow from the United States and Russia’s Irina Khromacheva. Despite this setback, Hsieh remains in contention in the women’s doubles, where she will team up with Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko. They are set to face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Hsieh continues to be Taiwan’s last hope in the women’s doubles draw after her compatriot Chan Hao-ching and Ukrainian partner Lyudmyla Kichenok suffered a defeat in the last-16 round. They were bested 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 by China’s Zhang Shuai (??) and France’s Kristina Mladenovic. Notably, Hsieh made history last year by becoming the first player in nearly 24 years to clinch both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles at the Australian Open.
