Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching ousted in Nottingham Open semifinals

Taiwanese tennis player Chan Hao-ching (???) and her Japanese partner Shuko Aoyama were knocked out of the semifinals in the women’s doubles event at the Nottingham Open on Saturday.

The third-seeded pair were defeated by top seeds Zhang Shuai (??) of China and Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 4-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted 79 minutes.

The straight-set loss belied a relatively close match, in which the sides fought to a 4-4 tie in the first set, before Zhang and Haddad Maia pulled away in the final two games.

In the second set, Chan and Aoyama fell behind 2-5 before winning the next two games to pull back into contention, only to slip up in the 10th game of the set, dashing their hopes for a comeback.

The pair’s defeat comes one day after Zhang and Haddad Maia ousted Chan’s sister, Latisha Chan (???) and her Australian partner Samantha Stosur 6-1, 6-7, 10-6 in a closely-fought quarterfinals match.

With their victory, the Chinese-Brazilian pair will advance to face Caroline Dolehide of the United States and Romanian Monica Niculescu in the tournament finals on Sunday.

The Nottingham Open, a WTA 250 tournament played on grass, is held in June as a preparation for Wimbledon, which is scheduled to take place this year from June 27 to July 10.
