Taiwan’s Huang Ying-hsuan Wins Silver in Taekwondo at 2025 World University Games

Taipei: Taiwanese taekwondoin Huang Ying-hsuan clinched a silver medal in the women’s taekwondo under-46 kilogram kyorugi event at the 2025 Summer World University Games in Germany. Kyorugi, the sparring discipline of Taekwondo, witnessed intense competition as Huang faced off against Korea’s Kim Yun-seo in the finals.

According to Focus Taiwan, Huang was on the verge of winning gold but was ultimately defeated by Kim Yun-seo, who secured the match with a 2-0 victory. The first round saw both athletes going toe-to-toe, with Kim narrowly taking the lead at 8-10. As the second round unfolded, Huang found herself trailing early with a score of 0-6. Despite narrowing the score to 4-8 through Kim’s fouls, Kim regained her momentum, ending the match at 7-22 to claim the gold medal.

This silver medal marks Huang’s second consecutive silver at the biennial sports competition, having previously secured silver in the same division at the 2023 Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China. Reflecting on her performa
nce, Huang expressed her desire to win gold but acknowledged that nerves affected her performance in the latter part of the match.

Huang also shared the support she received from Taiwanese fans, including encouraging text messages sent during the early morning hours in Taiwan. Despite the challenging final, Huang demonstrated her prowess throughout the tournament, notably defeating Italian taekwondoin Elisa Bertagnin with ease in the semifinals, winning 2-0.

Looking forward, Huang is determined to continue her hard work. She expressed her hopes to compete in the next edition of the games and, if given the chance to represent Taiwan again, aims to secure a gold medal.
