Taipei: Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te emphasized the necessity for robust defense capabilities and national unity in response to Beijing’s efforts to modify the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Lai addressed military personnel, including high-ranking officers, in Taipei, highlighting the increasing severity of Taiwan’s security situation.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lai pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has been attempting to change the cross-strait status quo through military operations near Taiwan, employing gray-zone tactics and cognitive warfare. He stressed that China’s actions pose a threat not only to Taiwan’s democracy and freedom but also to the broader democratic world.
The president’s remarks came a day before a major military parade in Beijing, marking the end of World War II following Japan’s surrender. The event is expected to see participation from leaders of Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
Lai underscored the importance of social solidarity and preparedness in both military and societal domains, asserting that these are essential to safeguarding Taiwan’s sovereignty and democracy. He detailed his administration’s initiatives over the past year, which include enhancing servicemen’s salaries and benefits, increasing defense spending, and investing in military capabilities.
Furthermore, Lai expressed gratitude towards military officers, especially those involved in defending Taiwan against Chinese incursions near its airspace and territorial waters, acknowledging their crucial role in protecting the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s survival and development.
